The Erotic is Ours to Reclaim
What happens when Black people are invited to experience our bodies outside of survival?
Outside of respectability.
Outside of shame.
Outside of performance.
Outside of the expectations placed upon Black bodies by religion, patriarchy, white supremacy, capitalism, and the gaze of others.
Afro-Eroticism is an invitation to find out.
A signature program of The Pleasure Commons, Afro-Eroticism creates intentional spaces for Black adults—especially Black women, femmes, queer people, and others whose pleasure has been policed—to explore the erotic as a source of power, knowledge, creativity, connection, and freedom.
This is bigger than sex.
This is about coming home to the body.

Ancestral Erotics
Our exploration does not begin with oppression.
Black people have always created pleasure.
Across the African diaspora, our people have cultivated practices of adornment, dance, rhythm, touch, beauty, courtship, celebration, fertility, spirituality, communal gathering, storytelling, food, music, movement, and embodied joy.
Afro-Eroticism refuses a story of Black bodies that begins only with what was done to us.
We begin with what belongs to us.
We explore the cultural and ancestral practices that remind us that pleasure, beauty, sensuality, creativity, and embodiment have always been part of Black life.
